Instinct (formerly known as Observation) is an ability that allows the player to dodge certain incoming attacks and see entities through solid surfaces. However, some moves are able to break Instinct, which disables Instinct temporarily.
Instinct can be upgraded to Instinct V2 after completing the Citizen's quest and getting 5,000 total Instinct EXP.
The hotkey to toggle Instinct is [E], [Left D-Pad on controller], or the [Eye button on Mobile/Touchscreen devices].
Obtainment[]
Instinct can be learned by talking to the Instinct Teacher.
Note: If the Instinct Teacher says " I am the strongest pirate to ever live. I will not have any weaklings in my crew" it means the player has not completed the Saber Puzzle yet.
Requirements[]
- To learn Instinct, the player needs to:
- Be Lv. 300 or higher.
- Have
750,000 to purchase Instinct ability from the Instinct Teacher. - Have completed the Saber Puzzle.
In Instinct[]
When Instinct is activated, every entity in the game is highlighted in 3 different colors, each indicated what each entity is.
- Red: Enemies, Bosses, Raid Bosses and Fruit NPC (e.g Love V or Ghost V)
- White: Players unallied to the user
- Green: Players allied to the user
Dodges[]
While Instinct is active, the user will gain a different number of dodges based on their Instinct's level, having 2 dodges at Instinct Lv. 1 and increasing by 1 dodge each level. Each dodge takes approximately 50 seconds to recharge. A hit from a normal enemy takes 0.5 charges away if Instinct is active, and 1 charge against bosses and players.
Increasing Dodges[]
Training[]
The player can increase the number of dodges they have by getting Instinct EXP, which can be obtained by dodging attacks while Instinct is active. Each dodge gives one EXP. The player can know how many Instinct EXP they currently have by talking to the Instinct Teacher. (Levels below are estimated, and there is no guarantee that they are entirely correct.)
| Level | Exp. | Dodges | Buffs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | [0]-[59] | 2 | Gives player dodges and visual range |
| 2 | [60-329] | 3 | Increased dodges and visual range |
| 3 | [330]-[816] | 4 | Increased dodges and visual range |
| 4 | [817]-[~1416 (approx.)] | 5 | Increased dodges and visual range |
| 5 | [~1417 (approx.)]-[2099] | 6 | Increased dodges and visual range |
| 6 | [2100]-[2823] | 7 | Increased dodges and visual range |
| 7 (MAX) | [2824]-[5000 (MAX)] | 8 | When max, you can upgrade to Instinct/V2. |
Notes[]
- There is a glitch where if you join a server and quickly turn on instinct for first time in that server, it will show 8/8 in instinct and change to original dodges you have. Note that this turns fast, so you cannot use those dodges. It will not work on players with 8 dodges already.
- While grinding Instinct EXP, it is recommended to farm the Shandas while server hopping, as this allows for the greatest number of dodges per server hop, and the player spawns right next to their area. They're also close to the Instinct Teacher, allowing the player to check their level whenever needed.
- If the player wishes to AFK grind for Instinct EXP, it is recommended to farm earlier enemies, such as Monkeys, due to the low damage output. If the player is using an Elemental-type fruit, they will have to choose any enemy with Aura or a Boss. It is also recommended to use an accessory that gives more charges (ex. Pale Scarf or Holiday Cloak), as these count to the EXP level up as well. Also, please note that regular Enemies take away only 0.5 of an instinct dodge and bosses take away 1 instinct dodge.
- The number of Instinct dodges can be increased by upgrading to Human V2 or by wearing accessories like Pale Scarf, Kitsune Mask (each +2 dodges), and Dojo Belt (Black), Holiday Cloak, Leviathan Crown (each +1 dodge).
Trivia[]
- Extra Instinct dodges that the player gains from accessories count towards training.
- If the player is holding a move (ex. Cursed Dual Katana's [X] move) with Instinct active and they get hit, it will break regardless of if they have dodges.
- Non-boss enemies only drain half a dodge charge, instead of a full charge.
- They still give the player 1 EXP, meaning using instinct on non-boss enemies is the best way to grind EXP.
- Many attacks can temporarily disable Instinct (such as Spider's X move), known as "Instinct Breaking". Players can use this to their advantage during PvP. NPC attacks can also sometimes disable Instinct.
- For a list of moves that can break Instinct, see Instinct/Break.
- Activating Instinct during a move to avoid additional damage or combos is known as "Instinct-Tricking" or more commonly known as 'Ken-Tricking'. This can be used to avoid a lot of damage but might need practice to perform successfully.
- The maximum number of dodges is 8 (11 with Pale Scarf or Kitsune Mask, and Human v2) at 2824 EXP, but players are recommended to get it to 5000 EXP for maximum range and to be able to do the Hungry Man Quest to get Instinct V2.
- Upon reaching Instinct’s max level, the player will be given the "Ultra Instinct" title #072.
- It takes approximately 50 seconds for 1 dodge to recover.
- Other players are always detected from further away than NPCs. This is to prevent lag.
- It is recommended to get Instinct before going Second Sea since it can prove to be very important and useful later on in the game, alongside gaining more EXP as the player goes on with the game.
- There is no cooldown when the player hops servers, therefore making it easier to grind EXP by simply hopping servers when the player has finished their charges.
- Instinct can detect NPCs that have not spawned if the player's range is far enough.
- Resetting with Instinct enabled will disable Instinct.
- The player's Instinct will be forcefully disabled when they join a raid, since "special abilities" are disabled during raids. Instinct is disabled for the entire time until they die or complete the raid.
- Equipping an accessory that grants extra dodges then removing the accessory will allow the player to keep the extra dodges until they’re used up.
- The player can see the enemy’s health and energy before they spawn.
- Moves that can go through solid objects and still damage opponents (ex. Skull Guitar's [Z]) mostly miss when the user tries to aim at their enemy through Instinct, because the object decreases the depth between the aimed location and the user.
